UNIVERSITY of the East officials assured Alvin Pasaol and Philip Manalang are staying put even as the Red Warriors installed an interim head coach for the men’s basketball team.

UE athletic director Rod Roque said women’s basketball assistant coach Melvin Reyes has been appointed interim coach with the preseason tournaments kicking off as early next month.

Reports surfaced that Pasaol and Manalang are thinking of leaving UE as the Red Warriors are still without a head coach, over four months after the resignation of Derrick Pumaren.

“Coach Melvin Reyes was officially declared as the UE Red Warriors men’s basketball team interim coach this morning after the tune-up game versus Mandaluyong team,” said Roque.

Reyes said he also spoke to Pasaol and Manalang following the tune-up match against Mandaluyong on Friday and received assurance from the two that they are not leaving the Red Warriors.

Pasaol and Manalang also played for UE in the tune-up game against the Mandaluyong squad that is being formed to play in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL), according to Reyes.

“Kanina kasama ko sa tune-up game si Alvin at Philip. Stay ‘yung mga players namin especially si Alvin at Philip,” said Reyes.

Pasaol was a key player for the Red Warriors last season, scoring a modern-day UAAP record of 49 points against La Salle while Manalang is the top point guard of UE after moving from National University high school.

Pasaol and Manalang suited up for UE in the recent UAAP 3x3 where the Red Warriors finished second to Far Eastern University.
