UNIVERSITY of the East coach Derrick Pumaren admitted he wanted the change in the Red Warriors to start with him, prompting his style transformation in UAAP Season 80.
In an interview after the Red Warriors' final game this season, Pumaren said he decided to wear chic clothes in order to shake up the team and inspire confidence in his wards.
“It was more for the team that we need a change. If it has to start from me, then I have to do it,” said Pumaren.
Although the Red Warriors matched their 3-11 win-loss record from last season, UE showed it can compete against the best of the UAAP with Alvin Pasaol leading the way for the Red Warriors.
This season, Pasaol scored a modern league-record 49 points in a game against La Salle, a performance that eventually led to him winning the Mythical Five honors.
“I have to do something just to get the win, inspire them, or whatever,” said Pumaren.
With his return to UE still uncertain, Pumaren joked about a back-up plan related to his stylish makeover.
"Kasi mag-aartista ako eh," he said, laughing. Watch his full interview here:
