Injury bug hits UE Red Warriors - and it had nothing to do with the players

    Jun 7, 2017

AN injury bug has hit University of the East, but it had nothing to do with a player.

UE coach Derrick Pumaren has been coaching the Red Warriors in their last few preseason games with a brace in his right knee.

"Nahirapan ako bantayan si Tenorio eh," said Pumaren in jest when asked about his injury on Wednesday after UE's 81-77 win over Letran in their final match of the tournament.

Turning serious, Pumaren explained he was involved in a freak accident that left him with a dislocated right patella in his knee.

"Lumabas 'yung buto, akala ko mapupunit. Tumama ako sa silya, napuruhan," said the PBA champion coach.

After a thorough check-up, Pumaren was relieved to know there was no tear in his knee, although he was required to wear a brace and undergo rehab.

"I thought I was going to be operated but thank God hindi naman. I'm starting to do my rehab," said Pumaren.

Pumaren said the injury won't keep him from coaching the Red Warriors in the preseason, but admitted it restricted his movements and kept him from driving a car.

"Kasi may movement na masakit kapag nabe-bend ko. I cannot do the usual things like standing up. It takes time to stand up. Nahihirapan ako," said Pumaren.

"But I have to do my job," he added.

Doctors expect the injury to heal in two weeks, he said.

"Hindi tuloy ako makapag-one-on-one sa mga players ko," he smiled. "Hopefully, in two weeks time, I'll be up and driving."
