THE UAAP will suspend its juniors basketball competitions to give way to the Philippine youth team's campaign in the Fiba-Asia Under-18 championships in Mongolia.
UAAP secretary treasurer Junel Baculi said the board has approved the request of Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas to lend Jerie Pingoy of Far Eastern University and Hubert Cani of National University to the national team.
The tournament will run from August 17 to 26 in Ulan Bator, Mongolia or right after the end of the first round.
“We will temporarily suspend our games for that duration of the tournament,” said Baculi.
Games in the seniors basketball tournament, however, will not be called off due to the league’s commitment with its television broadcast partner ABS-CBN.
A number of seniors players in the national team like Ateneo college rookie Kris Porter are also in the youth team but Baculi said that those players were already given a go-signal by the Blue Eagles to play for the national team.
SBP executive director Sonny Barrios personally thanked the UAAP during its board meeting last week. During the same meeting, Baculi was also appointed by the UAAP as its representative to the SBP board.
