Next UAAP season likely to start in August as five member schools adopt new academic calendar

UAAP Season 78 likely to start in August as five of eight member schools adopt new academic calendar
Nov 19, 2014

UAAP Season 78 will most likely start in August next year, a month later than usual, as most Philippine universities have adopted the new academic calendar.

Rod Roque, UAAP Season 77 secretary treasurer, said the move from the usual July opening of the league’s centerpiece event of basketball is “inevitable” with five of the league’s eight members beginning the shift to a September start of classes to integrate with Southeast Asian neighbors.

That means the start of the volleyball competition, the second semester centerpiece, will likely be moved to December or January.

Roque said Season 78 host University of the Philippines will begin its 2015-2016 academic year in August.

“Since UP will be hosting next season, and they are starting in August, they might open up in the second week of August,” said Roque. “Nasa 60-40 na ’yun. It has to be approved by the board.”

Roque said the UAAP in the next few years will have to start in September.

“Inevitable na ’yun dahil ang collegiate calendar magpapalit na. Soon, baka September na ang opening ng UAAP,” Roque added.

UE, National University, and Adamson have not adjusted their academic calendars yet, but Roque said the shift in the UAAP opening would not be a problem for the three schools.

“There is an Asean integration na para sa accreditation. Pero kaming tatlo, hindi kami naghahabol sa Asean integration kaya hindi kami magpapalit,” said Roque.
