UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas seeks to extend its six-game winning streak against the only team which had beaten it so far in the UAAP men's basketball tournament as action in the second round kicks off on Thursday at the Mall of Asia Arena.
The top-ranked Growling Tigers face fellow title contender Far Eastern University in the 4 p.m. main game of a doubleheader. The Tamaraws edged out the Tigers by a point during the opener last July 14.
But the Tigers have not lost since that heartbreaking setback, stringing up six straight wins to end the first round on top with a 6-1 (win-loss) slate. Defending champion Ateneo also sports the same record, but UST owns the tie-breaker via the winner-over-the-other rule.
The UST-FEU encounter is just one of several marquee match-ups being awaited in the second round after the league released its schedule for the remaining games of the eliminations.
Meanwhile, Ateneo opens its second-round campaign against University of the Philippines on August 25 and FEU on August 29, both at the MOA Arena, before a clashing with archrival De La Salle on September 1 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
UST and Ateneo takes on each other on September 20 at the MOA Arena in a highly-anticipated rematch.
In other matches, UST battles La Salle on August 29 after the Tigers outlasted the Green Archers in a classic double overtime last August 4.
La Salle goes up against National University on September 9 at the MOA Arena in a game where the Green Archers will look to repeat their double-overtime win against the Bulldogs last August 18.
In a move that will speed up the second round, the league plays on back-to-back days on Wednesday and Thursday twice (August 29-30 and September 19-20) aside from the usual Saturday and Sunday games.
