STARTING this season, the UAAP will play its weekday men’s basketball matches on a Wednesday instead of a Thursday.
Nilo Ocampo, last season’s UAAP president, confirmed the league’s move saying that it is aimed at sparing any team from having to play back-to-back games with only one full day of rest.
Previously, the league played its men’s basketball games on Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays.
However, Ocampo said that coaches have expressed their concern about the previous schedule since there was always the possibility that a team would play consecutive games on a Thursday and Saturday.
But the possibility of a Wednesday playdate opened up after the UAAP’s broadcast partner ABS-CBN lost the broadcast rights of the NCAA to TV5 prior to the start of last season.
ABS-CBN had previously aired the NCAA games on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, making it impossible for the UAAP to move its games to a different day on a weekday.
The NCAA had since moved to TV5 where its games were aired on primetime every Monday, Thursday, and Saturday by AKTV over IBC-13.
The UAAP opens its 76th season on June 29 at the Mall of Asia Arena.
