THE UAAP is looking into the possibility of holding four men’s basketball games every Wednesday in Season 82 of the UAAP to be able to give way to the country’s hosting of the Southeast Asian Games.
UAAP executive director Rebo Saguisag said the move is being eyed by Season 82 host Ateneo to avoid schedule conflicts with the SEA Games set in December.
Saguisag though said the league, which usually opens in September, is still looking for other options.
“We are still negotiating with [television partner] ABS-CBN. They are open to the idea but we are still exploring other options. We have to give way for the country’s hosting,” said Saguisag.
The men’s basketball tournament usually ends in December, but the UAAP is looking to finish the earliest possible due to the SEA Games. The Mall of Asia Arena, which also hosts UAAP basketball games, will be used for the basketball competitions of the biennial event.
“We are targeting na huwag na umabot ng fourth week of November,” said Saguisag.
Saguisag said the league is not considering an early opening due to enrollment concerns as all UAAP member schools have now moved their opening of classes to August.
“Problema naman ‘yung enrollment nila and eligibility issues,” said Saguisag on a possible early opening.
