UAAP moves to reduce TV timeouts after longer gamedays in Season 80 opening week draw flak

    Sep 23, 2017

THE UAAP vowed to continue to find ways to shorten games after it already lessened the TV timeouts during each quarter of the seniors basketball matches of Season 80.

UAAP executive director Rebo Saguisag said the league has already reduced TV timeouts from two to one per quarter beginning Wednesday.

The move was made after the TV timeouts led to longer games during the opening weekend of Season 80 in which the doubleheaders which started at 2 p.m. usually ended at around 7 p.m.

Saguisag, who is also the basketball commissioner, said the league made the move by itself following the more-than-five-hour gamedays during the opening weekend that drew flak not even from the public but also within the UAAP itself.

"Continuous review naman 'yan," said Saguisag. "The tournament director Mark Molina, ABS-CBN through Direk Abet (Ramos), and I were coordinating after the first day pa lang na may mga feedback agad. It might be not for the best of everyone in the sense na nasisira 'yung flow ng game."

Saguisag said the imposition of two TV timeouts each quarter during the first few games of Season 80 became disruptive to the flow of the game, which is why the league made the change.

"It's an observation from all of us. Even me as a fan, I found it too disruptive. There's so much interference. The beauty of basketball is there is a certain flow. Kapag walang pito, puwedeng tumuloy 'yung 10 minutes ng non-stop action.

"We discussed it with the tournament director, and with ABS-CBN. It was a unanimous decision from the stakeholders," said Saguisag.

Saguisag said the UAAP is now looking at imposing TV timeouts that will be in compliance with Fiba rules.

"From two every quarter, we made it one every quarter. But we are still working on trying to be compliant sa Fiba. In Fiba kasi, if one other team takes a timeout near the five-minute mark, it's now deemed as a TV timeout. Dito (sa UAAP), hiwalay pa rin," said Saguisag.
