THE UAAP could find itself embroiled in another court battle over the controversial residency requirement that has come to be known as the 'Pingoy rule.'

Unimpeachable sources told Spin.ph a group led by Senator Pia Cayetano is set to contest in court the legality of the league's new rule that requires high school players transferring from one UAAP school to another to undergo two years of residency.

There were reports that Cayetano had filed the case this week, but sources from the senator's camp said she is set to file the case this coming week.

One thing for sure, the controversial new rule is set to be scrutinized in a court of law.

Cayetano had already conducted a Senate inquiry into the residency rule, which the league implemented shortly after former Far Eastern University high school star Jerie Pingoy decided to move to Ateneo for his college varsity years.

The senator also launched an online petition and threatened as early as April to haul the league to court if it does not repeal the contentious rule. (For full story, see Cayetano blasts UAAP board over 'grave abuse of authority')

The league later inserted a clause that spares a transferee from the residency requirement if he gets a release from his school, but defied widespread calls for its repeal. (For full story, see No promises from UAAP board despite Pia pleas)

Just last week, the league was slapped with a Temporary Restraining Order (TRO) over its decision to declare University of the Philippines Integrated School player Jozhua General ineligible to play for the Junior Maroons this season.

The 20-day TRO was issued on August 16 and paved the way for the return to action of General. (For full story, see Court issues TRO on UAAP decision ruling Junior Maroon General ineligible)
