THE University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) goes one step further this season by expanding the use of video replays in the men’s basketball tournament that kicks off July 14 at the Mall of Asia Arena.

National University athletic director Junel Baculi said teams can now challenge out-of-bounds situations and tap-out plays through a review of the video by the referees during the final two minutes of a game.

“One significant rule that we added this season is the challenge on tap-outs and out-of-bounds situations just like in the NBA and the PBA,” said this year’s UAAP secretary-treasurer in Tuesday’s PSA Forum.

“But that’s only in the last two minutes.”

In recent UAAP seasons, video replays were only used for the purpose of reviewing last-second shots at the end of each quarter and in cases of contested three-point conversions.

Baculi, who’s also head coach of PBA team Barako Bull, said the UAAP board of trustees has already begun drawing up clear-cut rules that will be included in a manual to be provided for each school.

“We discussed the rules and regulations of the league and we have come out with a manual where all the rules are already there para uniform na at least for the next three years,” Baculi said.
