THIS early, the UAAP is already warning its athletes over irresponsible tweeting.

Although the college league has yet to  to put up social media guidelines for players and team officials, league president Nilo Ocampo said it won't tolerate tweets and Facebook posts that can possibly destroy the UAAP's image. UAAP president Nilo Ocampo. Photo by Jerome Ascano

“We haven’t discussed anything about it,” said Ocampo at the league’s press launch on Monday at the SM Mall of Asia Arena. “If anything comes out, the board will convene and discuss when that time comes.”

“It’s hard to control those tweets,” added Ocampo. “We have no way of controlling the sentiments of athletes and coaches.

“But at the same time, I also want to inform them that before they tweet something that may be destructive, I think they should have to think twice and let the day pass before they tweet.”

Just last week, the PBA slapped a P500,000 fine and a one-conference suspension on Barako Bull’s Don Allado after a tweet saying that games in the league are fixed. He later apologized and retracted his tweet.

College students represent a big part of social media in the country, and the UAAP season is expected to even boost the activity on social networks.
