The second week of UAAP Season 80 saw the emergence of players after a struggling debut, and top stars sustaining their fiery form.
Who impressed and who bombed out in Week 2? Here’s the latest of SPIN.ph’s Studs and Duds list
The La Salle sophomore finally played to his potential on Saturday after Rivero finished with 21 points, seven rebounds, and two assists in La Salle's 115-109 win over National University. He atoned for his slump on opening weekend when he only shot 1-of-11 from the field.
Another player who struggled in his team's opening game, Manalang bounced back when he hit 5-of-10 from three-point range to finish with 19 points along with four rebounds, five assists, and two steals as Adamson picked up the win over University of Santo Tomas, 88-81, on Sunday.
Talk about being being efficient. Nursing an ankle injury in the first game, Tio was perfect form the field for Ateneo as he had a 6-of-6 clip in only 11 minutes in the Blue Eagles' win over University of the Philippines, 92-71, on Wednesday.
The entire UE Red Warriors
The Red Warriors are winless in three games to occupy the bottom spot in the team standings. Worse, eight players went scoreless in UE's match against UP that made head coach Derrick Pumaren looking for his veterans to step up.
Cani is still looking to find his rhythm with the Tamaraws as he combined for a 2-of-12 clip from the field in two matches this week.
In Wednesday's match against Ateneo, Desiderio struggled to make his shots as he only made 4-of-18 from the field and a 1-of-7 mark from threes. He did find his touch in his career game in a win over UE on Sunday, but still, that Red Warriors defense hasn’t exactly been stingy.
This Week’s MVPs
Melecio played consistent ball as he showed his opening weekend play was no fluke. The former UAAP juniors MVP had 20 points and eight assists, including five triples in La Salle's high-scoring win over NU.
Ravena sustained his improved play in the second weekend of the season as he had 18 points and 11 rebounds for the Blue Eagles in their win over FEU on Sunday. He capped off his performance with a resounding tip-in in the final moments of the game to clinch the victory.
