WHILE heroes have come in different forms for Ateneo in the UAAP Season 80, Thirdy Ravena remains the consistent rock that the Blue Eagles have been built upon.
Ravena has been averaging 18 points and nine rebounds as they started the tournament like a house on fire, winning three games to start the season and take the solo lead after the second week of the tournament.
Saddled by inconsistency last season, the former UAAP Juniors MVP is now starting to play as what’s expected of him.
“I need to stay more consistent than last season. Last season, I’ll have a good game then the next game, polar opposite. I’m just mentally focused coming into the season, that I need to be consistent,” Ravena said.
In their 94-82 win over season hosts FEU Tamaraws, Ravena finished with 18 points, 11 rebounds and five assists to power the Blue Eagles to another impressive victory.
In this game, Ravena was doing everything efficiently, slicing through the defense with ease and knocking down one midrange shot after another.
What’s most impressive is how Ravena has been at ease at knocking down three pointers, draining two of his four attempts and looking pretty much confident while taking those shots.
“Whatever Coach Tab (Baldwin) instructs me to do, yun lang ang gagawin ko. 'Cause he told me, whenever I'm free, just shoot it,” said Ravena.
“Kasi minsan natatakot ako tumira ng tres, pero binigyan niya ako ng confidence throughout the summer and sa preseason. So malaking tulong ang instruction ni Coach Tab, at 'yung kumpyansa na binigay niya sa akin at sa mga teammates ko. So, 'yun,” he added.
Now that they are already in year two under the tutelage of Tab Baldwin, Ravena is pretty confident that they are already getting the hang of what Baldwin wants to do.
It has been pretty evident with the numerous players who have been coming up left and right in Ateneo’s frenzied start.
“With the team kasi we really don’t care who gets the most points or the most rebounds, it doesn’t matter. All that matters it that we play into the system and buy into the system and follow whatever coach Tab says. He’s been in the game for a long time so he knows what he’s doing,” Ravena continued.
“I have to trust my teammates cause everyone’s been doing a really good job. We’ve been winning cause everyone’s staying together and we followed whatever coach Tab told us. We follow the system, maybe just a bit of the defensive game plans but we’re still able to get a win.”
