THIRDY Ravena lauded the playmaking of Tyler Tio as he credited the Ateneo point guard for making his game-winner happen on Sunday in their Filoil preseason battle against archrival La Salle.
Ravena drained a three-point shot from the left corner over La Salle cager Leonard Santillan with 9.8 seconds left in the fourth to lift the Blue Eagles to an 80-78 victory over reigning Filoil and UAAP titlists Green Archers on Sunday.
Ravena, who finished with nine points, deflected the credit to Ateneo coach Tab Baldwin for drawing up the play and to Tio for hitting him with the perfect pass.
"Ginawa lang ni Tyler 'yung play ni coach Tab. Kung sino 'yung tao ni Leonard (Santillan), siya 'yung magpapa-ball screen para mag-switch sila. Then, Tyler did his job. He did it very well. He drew my defender in, and kicked it out," Ravena said.
Ravena emerged the unlikely hero for the Blue Eagles despite being pulled in and out of the match during the later stages for different situations. He didn't mind.
"Buti sinuwerte ako sa three points," said Ravena. "I came from the bench and I wasn't really warmed up so suwerte lang talaga."
"Naiintindihan ko naman na coming off the start of the second half, I did exactly what Coach Tab told us not to do. Naiintindihan ko na nagmamadali ako masyado at parang instructions sa amin, be composed dahil nagta-trap. Naintindihan ko naman bakit ako linabas.
"Nung sinabihan ako to contribute on defense, 'yun lang talaga 'yung ginawa kong trabaho," said Ravena.
It only happened that he got the shot at the game-winner, Ravena said.
"'Yun 'yung opportunity na nag-present sa akin. Seeing my teammates, seeing how they worked, inisip ko lang, 'I can't let them down.' Marami kaming pinagdaanan na paghihirap, kung ano man kailangan kong gawin, 'yun 'yung opportunity na nakuha ko, kukunin ko," said Ravena.
