THIRDY Ravena was hard on himself for committing late-game errors that doomed Ateneo in their Game One loss to La Salle in the UAAP men’s basketball Finals on Saturday.

While it was a questionable non-foul call, the Blue Eagles star forward still lamented his turnover that led to his team losing possession and Jeron Teng scoring the go-ahead basket for the Green Archers.

“I think I have no excuse for what I did,” Ravena, who committed a team-worst six errors, said after the 65-67 loss to the Green Archers. “It was a very bad mental mistake on my part.”

Ravena, after resetting the play following a second-chance possession off Matt Nieto’s missed free throw, said he should’ve just fed Nieto, who, he felt, had the hot hand after making his jumper that gave them the lead.

“Matt just made a foul-counted shot and I should have just given him the ball,” Ravena said. “I have no excuse for it.”

Ravena was also scoreless in the payoff period after contributing eight points in the first three periods.

“Siuro yung pressure ng finals, La Salle in general, they're a very, very strong team,” Ravena said. “And siguro, I don't want to use it as an excuse, pero feel ko maybe because we're young, di kami sanay na ganito kalaking laro ang lalaruin namin. Not everyone in the team has been in this kind of a game. And it was just a bad start.”

Still, the Eagles refused to go down without a fight and that’s where Ravena draws strength from.

“We fought, just like what we do every single game, we fight,” Ravena said. “Even though things did not seem okay sa start, we just tried to play with our hearts and not let the gravity of the game intimidate us. Just play our own game. We just played team basketball.”
