FAR Eastern University snapped University of the East’s mini-winning run with an 83-78 victory on Saturday to regain lost ground following a boardroom decision in the UAAP seniors basketball tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena.
The Tamaraws survived a furious Red Warriors run late in the fourth but the sizeable lead they garnered proved to be enough to capture their eighth win against three losses.
FEU should have been 9-3 by now had their win over National University not been ordered replayed by the UAAP board after the referees' decision to count RR Garcia’s last-second shot was reversed.
The Tamaraws earned a 69-59 lead after the third quarter as they neutralized the Red Warriors’ fastbreak attacks.
“Buti na-stop namin ‘yung fastbreak ng UE,” said FEU coach Bert Flores.
Terrence Romeo finished with 24 points while Roger Pogoy added 17 points and 13 rebounds for the Tamaraws.
The Red Warriors’ 8-0 run cut down the Tamaraws’ lead to 81-77 but Pogoy put the finishing touches to the game with a drive to the basket with 40 seconds remaining. Jhon Sumido only made one of three free throws in UE’s next possession.
