FAR EASTERN University proved steadier down the stretch and defeated University of the Philippines 67-63 on Thursday to forge a tie for second place with University of Santo Tomas in the UAAP seniors basketball tournament at the Philsports Arena.
Roger Pogoy had 16 points, Terrence Romeo added 13 and RR Garcia came up with 11 for the Tamaraws, who won their ninth game in 12 tries to keep pace with the Tigers in the race for a twice-to-beat advantage in the Final Four.
Anthony Hargrove scored on a tip-in while Pogoy hit two free throws in the late goings to grab hold of the lead for FEU.
The Maroons lost another heartbreaker, absorbing their 12th loss in 13 outings.
FEU coach Bert Flores said the Tamaraws won’t be celebrating the win and will focus on their preparations for all-important matches against La Salle on September 16 and National University on September 23 which will have a big say on their playoff position.
“Importante na mga laro namin. Dikit pa rin sa standings kaya buti na lang kahit papaano nanalo kami,” said Flores.
The Maroons lead 43-37 in the third period. FEU managed to take control before UP briefly regained the lead, going up by one on a Raul Soyud jumper with two minutes and 24 seconds to play in the fourth.
