FROM the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) to the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP).
Joaquin `Chito’ Loyzaga is set to assume the post as UAAP basketball commissioner for the league’s 76th season, according to a source, who declined to be identified.
The former Ginebra star and PSC commissioner, according to the source, has accepted the position to head the league’s basketball tournament when Adamson plays host for the coming season.
His appointment came nearly a year after stepping down from his post with the government sports agency.
The same source also said last season’s commissioner Ato Badolato will serve as Loyzaga’s deputy.
The commissioner role in a major cage league is nothing new to Loyzaga, who once held the same position with the defunct Metropolitan Basketball Association.
When Spin.ph last talked to Loyzaga three weeks ago, the son of legendary Philippine basketball hero Caloy Loyzaga, said he was involved in an alumni-led program that seeks to boost the high school basketball team of San Beda, which he led to an NCAA championship in 1978.
Chito was appointed by President Aquino as one of four PSC commissioners in 2010 along with Salvador Andrada, Akiko Thomson-Guevarra, and Jose Luis Gomez.
But Loyzaga resigned in April of last year, saying he needed time to take care of his ailing father in Australia.
However, rumors persisted that differences with other officials over his stand on the PSC’s prioritization program led to his resignation.
Loyzaga was replaced by Wigberto ‘Iggy’ Clavecilla.
