UNIVERSITY of the East heaved a sigh of relief after doctors ruled out a ligament tear on the injury suffered by star Roi Sumang near the end of the Red Warriors' loss to Ateneo on Sunday afternoon.
The Warriors got a scare when Sumang landed awkwardly after a drive late in the Red Warriors’ 72-77 loss to the Blue Eagles at the Mall of Asia Arena and winced in pain under the basket.
Sumang, the league's second leading scorer with a 19.3-point average, later had to be carried off the arena on a stretcher with his right leg in a brace as he was brought to a hospital for an MRI test.
But UE coach Boycie Zamar was quick to allay fears following an examination done on Sumang by doctors.
“Awa ng Diyos, walang ACL, walang MCL,” said Zamar. “Papa-follow-up na lang namin sa doctor kung ano ‘yung final.”
Even though UE is out of contention for a Final Four berth, Zamar said Sumang could be ready to play in UE’s next game against Adamson on Saturday.
“Nakita mo naman na nagpapakamatay sa laro. Pero at the end of the day, we are concerned about their careers,” Zamar said.
