NATIONAL University’s Sherwin Meneses era is off to a winning start.
The seven-time PVL champion coach, and most recently a Grand Slam winner with Creamline, made his head coaching debut for the NU Lady Bulldogs in the 2024 Asian Women’s Club Volleyball Championship on Sunday in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand.

Branded as the Monolith Skyrisers, the NU-laden Philippine contingent won its first assignment in four sets over seven-time Iranian Super league silver medalist Saipa Tehran, 25-19, 25-18, 19-25, 25-18, to take the lead in Pool B.

As one would expect, NU seniors Alyssa Solomon and Bella Belen shone in the international stage they now know all too well as the Alas Pilipinas stars finished with 22 and 20 points, respectively.
“We came here not just to play and gather experience, but we also wanted to showcase our skills as a team,” Belen said.
“We knew that we would be up against really strong teams, and we need to be an equally strong team to compete in this field.”
Completing the Lady Bulldogs’ star trio was Vange Alinsug who fired the eventual game-winning attacks to top her eight-point night late in the fourth set for the victory.

Still to come for the defending UAAP women’s volleyball champions in pool play are Vietnam’s LP Bank Ninh Bình on Monday and Japan’s NEC Red Rockets on Tuesday.
Over in Pool A, NU's possible future foes include Kazakhstan's Kuanysh, Vietnam's Duc Giang Chemical Club, Hong Kong's Kwai Tsing and Thailand's winningest team Nakhon Ratchasima QminC.
