ANTIPOLO - Sherwin Concepcion has waited for this moment for the past two years.

Since graduating from Mapua High School, the 6-foot-2 shooter paid his dues as he embarked in this new journey with University of Santo Tomas in what he hoped would be a fulfillment of his dream.

"Nung nasa high school ako sa Mapua, dream kong makapaglaro ng UAAP pagdating ko ng college. Ginawa ko yung best ko para makapaglaro ako sa UAAP," he said.

Through this rookie season, the Tarlac-born forward has become a reliable role player for the Growling Tigers, averaging 7.4 points, 5.0 rebounds and 1.6 assists.

His biggest break came on Sunday when Concepcion was the biggest difference-maker in UST's 82-74 victory over FEU where he kncked down 12 points built on four treys in a 30-point third quarter that swung the tide in the Tigers' favor.

"Masaya ako kasi first time ko na nakatulong sa team. Yun naman laging pinagdadasal ko, na makatulong ako sa team at yung tiwala sa akin ni coach Aldin (Ayo) hindi mawala," he said.

Ayo was the least surprised by Concepcion's breakout game, further evidence of the confidence he has on everyone in his roster.

"I know my players at alam ko ang capabilities nila, yung kaya nilang gawin. That's why I've been telling him if you miss two or three [shots], as long as they're good shots, keep on taking those shots," he said.

"Equal opportunity for them naman dito eh. Whoever is open, sila ang titira. They got to take their shots, good shots, and these players know their roles. Sometimes they tend to forget but I always keep on reminding them."

Concepcion's stellar night is just a new layer to this new chapter at UST, which has already seen the ascendance of guys like Rhenz Abando, CJ Cansino, Mark Nonoy, and Soulemane Chabi Yo.

And the 22-year-old is keeping his fingers crossed that this would only be the start of his upswing in his rookie season in Espana.

"Sinasabi ko lang sa sarili ko, dapat makatulong ako sa team. Kumpyansa at depensa lang," he said.
