SEAN Manganti converted a putback with 1.4 seconds left to lift Adamson to its third straight win in a thrilling 73-71 victory over the University of the Philippines on Wednesday in the UAAP Season 80 seniors basketball tournament at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Manganti's game-winner moved Adamson to a tie with Far Eastern University for third place in the standings with a 4-2 record.
Manganti also stripped the inbound pass intended to Paul Desiderio to complete the win for Adamson.
After leading by as many as 14 points at the start of the first quarter, the Fighting Maroons slipped to their second straight loss for an even 3-3 card.
Jerrick Ahanmisi finished with 21 points on 8-of-11 from the field, while Jerie Pingoy added 10 points for the Falcons.
Robbie Manalang also came up big for the Falcons, nailing a clutch triple with 1:02 left in the fourth that put them ahead, 71-69.
"I guess we were lucky to win that game," said Adamson coach Franz Pumaren. "The whole game, we were struggling. We had a bad, flat start. We made a lot of mental mistakes."
"I guess this is a good test on our part that in the crucial moments of the game, we could survive a game like this," he added.
The loss spoiled the career-game of Jun Manzo, who had his personal best in the UAAP with 19 points. Desiderio, who also had 19 in the game, scored a game-tying lay-up with 22.1 seconds to play.
UP actually outrebounded Adamson, 40-34, in the game but could not grab the rebound twice in the final Adamson possession with Papi Sarr's follow-up off an airball by Ahanmisi went into the hands of Manganti, who made the putback in the end.
