ATENEO's basketball team is set to get a major boost as San Sebastian star Jaymar 'CJ' Perez is set to join the Blue Eagles.
Ateneo team manager Epok Quimpo confirmed that Perez is set to move to Ateneo after two seasons with San Sebastian, where his athleticism and energy have drawn comparisons with another former Stags star, Calvin Abueva, and earned him the moniker 'Baby Beast.'
San Sebastian officials could not be reached for comment as of posting time but sources from the school said the 19-year-old Perez left in good terms after informing management about his possible move to Ateneo.
“Nag-express na siya ng interest. We are facilitating the transfer,” said Quimpo.
Once the transfer is sealed, Perez is expected to be a major piece for the Blue Eagles after finishing third in NCAA Season 90 in scoring with his 18.2-point average while adding 7.3 rebounds, 2.8 assists, and 1.6 steals per game for San Sebastian last year.
Perez, however, will have to sit out for one year and will only be eligible in Season 79 or in 2016, leaving him with only one season of eligibility with the Blue Eagles.
The timing of his arrival could be perfect since Ateneo's current 'King Eagle,' Kiefer Ravena, will be leaving after one more season and Perez can immediately take over along with Ravena's younger brother Thirdy.
More importantly, Quimpo believes Perez won’t have a difficult time adjusting to academic life at Ateneo, since he regularly attends his classes with San Sebastian.
“Ang feedback namin is in terms of academics, pumapasok ‘yung bata. The transition, I hope, won’t be difficult,” said Quimpo.
