REIGNING NCAA champion San Beda spoiled the much-awaited debut of Kobe Paras and Ricci Rivero for University of the Philippines, downing the Maroons, 75-66, on Sunday in the 2019 Filoil Flying V Preseason Cup.
Donald Tankoua unloaded 24 points and 11 rebounds, punctuating the win with a booming triple with 4:33 to play that made it a 67-56 affair against a UP side that played its two prized recruits for the first time in the preseason tournament.
James Canlas added 13 points, seven boards, three assists, and two steals, while Evan Nelle had seven points and five dimes in the win at Filoil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
"We really expected a tough game. We consider UP as one of the stronger teams right now because of their recruits, sayang lang wala 'yung Gomez de Liano brothers, but still a good win for us," said coach Boyet Fernandez.
Jerson Prado tried to keep the Fighting Maroons in the game as his three-point play cut the deficit down to six, 67-61, before Tankoua's jumper and Nelle's and-one drove the final nails in UP's coffin, 72-61, with 1:29 left.
Rivero poured 18 points, five rebounds, two assists, and two steals for UP, but fouled out with three minutes remaining in the third frame.
Paras also got 18 points, four boards, and three blocks as the Fighting Maroons missed the services of the Gomez de Liano brothers Juan and Javi, Jun Manzo, as well as slotman Will Gozum.
