UNIVERSITY of the East top gunner Roi Sumang faces the possibility of an extended break after suffering an injury late in the Red Warriors’ game against five-time champion Ateneo in the UAAP men’s basketball tournament Sunday.
Sumang was seen wincing in pain after landing awkwardly entering the final minute of the match which the Warriors lost, 77-72, dashing their hopes of making it to the Final Four this season.
After the game, Sumang was transported out of the Mall of Asia Arena on a stretcher.
The Warriors, owner of a 5-7 (win-loss) record, face the prospect of missing their top scorer in the final two games of the season opposite Adamson on September 14 and University of the Philippines on September 18.
UE coach Boycie Zamar said there is still no prognosis on Sumang’s injury, but he has had problems on the knee which he was seen clutching after an awkward landing on a drive.
“He has to undergo an MRI,” Zamar said.
The UE coach said the possible absence of Sumang will definitely have a great effect on the team in its bid to end the season on a winning note.
“’Yung naiwan na sapatos, malaki,” Zamar pointed out.
