ROI Sumang was again a picture of disappointment after failing to convert basket in the homestretch that led to a second straight loss for University of the East in the UAAP men’s basketball tournament.
Against National University on Sunday, Sumang missed a driving lay-up with the towering Alfred Aroga on his path in the waning seconds, allowing the Bulldogs to escape with a 57-55 victory.
As he fell to the ground, Sumang started to shed tears while his teammates and coaches tried to console him in the aftermath of the Warriors’ third straight loss after an auspicious 2-0 start to the season.
Sumang actually didn't do all that badly, statistics-wise, as he finished with 16 points. But the effort went for naught.
“Sino bang hindi iiyak kapag dalawang beses ka matalo?” a visibly disappointed Sumang admitted after emerging from the dugout.
With another disappointing performance, Sumang is ready to face his critics.
“Hindi ko alam kung anong gagawin uli. Ayun, ako na naman uli ang titirahin,” he said.
Sumang, however, got words of encouragement from his teammates who vowed to protect the UE star from critics.
“Kahit sino naman matutuwa. Gusto ko ‘yung sinabi ni RR (De Leon) sa dugout na ako na naman ang titirahin sa social media kaya protektahan natin ‘yung teammate natin,” said Sumang.
“Ako handa na ako. Wala akong pakialam kung ano man ang sabihin nila sa akin. Maglalaro pa rin ako,” he added.
