RICKY Dandan, a former UP Maroons player who later on became coach of the school's varsity team in the UAAP, died on Wednesday after a lingering illness.
He was 61.
Dandan played under legendary coach Joe Lipa at UP until 1985, or the year before the Maroons won their maiden UAAP championship with a team led by Benjie Paras, Ronnie Magsanoc, and Eric Altamirano.

Dandan later became head coach of his alma mater for two-plus seasons until his resignation in 2013, when he was succeeded by former teammate Rey Madrid.
UP program director Bo Perasol confirmed his friend's death as he led the tributes for Dandan, who served as one of the deputies during the former's time in charge of the Maroons.
"Rest in peace tol - a true and loyal friend," wrote Perasol.

Dandan also held key coaching positions outside his alma mater. He served briefly as coach of Columbia Dyip (now Terrafirma) in the PBA and the Manila Metrostars in the MBA.
