UNIVERSITY of the Philippines coach Rey Madrid is facing suspension for his statements accusing referees of 'point shaving' on Saturday following the Maroons’ loss to University of Santo Tomas.
UAAP commissioner Andy Jao said a suspension for Madrid is definitely a possibility following his controversial comments, but he is giving the UP coach chance to explain his side before making a decision.
Jao said he will write a letter to Madrid in the next 24 hours asking him to explain his side.
“Of course naman,” said Jao when asked by reporters about the possibility of a suspension.
The penalty should be heavy, judging from the way Jao compared Madrid's comments to Don Allado's ‘game-fixing’ accusations against the PBA through Twitter two years ago.
Allado was fined P500,000 and banned for one conference by PBA commissioner Chito Salud.
“You remember Don Allado on Twitter? He was banned for a year. But that’s the PBA. In the NBA, you’ll be fined or suspended for a long period of time,” Jao said.
But Jao said he doesn’t intend to be as tough on Madrid.
“But I don’t want to be cruel to him. (His outburst were) also out of emotion. But there is something that we must do. We can’t continue this just like that,” said Jao.
Jao admitted he already has a sanction in mind but he needs to consult the UAAP board even if he doesn't need to after being given full authority to act solely on such matters.
“Actually, ang paniniwala ko, I can do that on my own. But I wanted to consult them (UAAP board) because siyempre, they are also the board members,” said Jao.
Jao admitted Madrid had already talked to him right after their 73-57 loss to UST on Saturday, but the commissioner said he was unsure what the UP coach was trying to imply.
“I don’t really know where he was coming from and where he is going to,” said Jao, recalling the conversation with Madrid. “I didn’t understand the situation at all. He was never really clear as to what he wanted. He kept saying numbers. But he was implying gambling to you (media).”
“But the situation is there. I have to do something about it. I will give him the opportunity (to explain), maybe write him a letter explaining within 24 hours,” said Jao.
