    Reprieve for Pido as board finds no need to dig into issue

    THE UAAP Board on Wednesday spared University of Santo Tomas coach Pido Jarencio from sanctions following his tirade against officiating during Game One of the UAAP Finals on Saturday.

    The board, in fact, did not even find the need to include the Jarencio issue in the agenda of its regular board meeting on Wednesday at the Crowd Plaza Hotel, said league president Nilo Ocampo.

    “Wala kaming pinag-usapan regarding Pido,” said Ocampo in an SMS message.

    Jarencio had furiously complained about the calls of the referees in the dying seconds of Game One and was seen on video bumping one of the referees late in the Tigers' 78-83 defeat.

    The UST mentor also attacked the officiating during the postgame interview, with some of his fiery remarks fueling a heated exchange of words with Ateneo counterpart Norman Black.

    UAAP commissioner Ato Badolato gave Jarencio a 'serious reprimand' for his actions, especially upon learning later that the UST coach had "come into contact" with the referees after Game One.

    Badolato also defended the game officials who worked the series opener, saying it was “fairly officiated.”

    The commissioner also called on coaches, players, and fans to practice sobriety ahead of Game Two on Thursday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
