RENZO Subido waxed hot for University of Santo Tomas to lead his team to a hard-fought 88-87 win over University of the East on Saturday, their first win in the UAAP Season 79 basketball tournament at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
Subido scored 26 points for the Growling Tigers, who survived a late rally by the Red Warriors to give Boy Sablan his first win as head coach.
“Kahit ganun na nagkaproblema kami sa huli, naka-survive ’yung UST,” said Sablan.
UST’s momentum was suddenly halted after the scoreboard malfunctioned at the 3:39 mark of the fourth period. UE came up with an 8-0 run to cut the Growling Tigers’ lead to 86-85 with 42.2 seconds to play.
But the Growling Tigers survived as the Red Warriors missed shots late in the ballgame.
The Growling Tigers overhauled an eight-point deficit at halftime with a 30-17 third quarter to grab a 69-64 advantage entering the fourth.
“Hindi namin na-execute ’yung game plan namin. Nagkaroon kami ng problema sa execution kaya naiwan agad kami nung first quarter. Pero ’yung adjustment namin sa second quarter, nakuha na namin hanggang nung second half,” Sablan said.
Jon Sheriff scored 15 points, while Marvin Lee contributed 14 points for the Growling Tigers, who also got 10 rebounds from Jan Macasaet.
Nick Abanto and Bon Batiller had 15 points each for the Red Warriors, who fell to 0-2 to start the season.
