A TALK with his point guards a day before University of Santo Tomas’ match against University of the East proved instrumental as Boy Sablan nabbed his first win as coach of the Growling Tigers.
Renzo Subido, Jon Sheriff, and Marvin Lee delivered for the Growling Tigers on Saturday at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum, combining for 55 points in UST’s 88-87 victory over UE.
UST coach Sablan bared he had a heart-to-heart talk with his four point guards on Friday coming into the match against UE, following their dismal output in their loss to Ateneo last Sunday.
“Kinausap ko silang apat, lahat ng point guards ko. Tignan niyo naman ‘yung stats, lahat sila nag-deliver,” said Sablan, who also saw third-stringer Oliver De Guzman score two points in just four minutes of play for UST.
“Na-motivate siguro sila dahil nag-deliver silang lahat. Napakaganda ‘yung nakausap ko sila,” he added.
Subido led the way for the Growling Tigers, finishing with a career-high 26 points including a 9-of-16 from the field. Lee, meantime, was able to regain his bearings following a disappointing first game as the sophomore had 14 markers.
Even Sheriff, not particularly known for his offense, also contributed 15 points, including a rare triple, for UST. For Sablan, the standout performance of his backcourt reveals the confidence of his wards this season.
“Kita niyo naman si Sheriff, tumitira na. Nagulat kayo na tumira din siya ng three points,” he said.
“’Yung confidence level nila, mataas talaga kaya talagang lalaban sila,” added Sablan.
