RENZO Subido is glad his patience has finally paid off as the University of Santo Tomas guard had a breakout game to lead the Growling Tigers to their first win in UAAP Season 79.
The 20-year-old Subido had his best game as a seniors player, scoring 26 points in the UST's 88-87 victory over University of the East on Saturday at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
Subido's career-high output was a culmination of waiting for his opportunity in three seasons. The former La Salle-Zobel cager was rarely used in his first two seasons with the Growling Tigers, including last year when he sustained an ACL tear prior to Season 78.
“Nakita ko rin ‘yung mga downs ko as a player. I used it as a motivation and a challenge para ma-lift up ‘yung game ko,” said Subido.
Subido was proficient from the field, hitting 9-of-16 including a 4-of-9 clip from beyond the arc. He also hit back-to-back triples to put the Growling Tigers ahead, 78-66.
“Alam kong puputok ‘yun,” said UST coach Boy Sablan, who was not surprised with Subido’s play.
“Nakita ko na ‘yun eh. Nakita ko sa Cebu, nakita ko sa Taiwan (during the preseason). ‘Yung tamamg time lang talaga ni Renzo. Alam kong may mangyayari sa kanya this year unlike nung past years. Nakita ko na sa practice at sa actual games,” he added.
Subido said he never gave up on himself despite the trials in his college career.
“At first, I was frustrated. I wanted to play and I know ‘yung capability ko. But I took it as a challenge na pagdating ko next season, I would be a better and sharper player,” said Subido.
