Renzo Subido immortalizes self in hearts of UST fans with big trey

Big moment was four years in the making for gutsy UST guard
    Nov 13, 2019

UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas guard Renzo Subido used to be a lanky kid who dreamed of hitting big shots in front of thousands of fans in attendance.

He did just that on Wednesday - and immortalized himself in the hearts of Thomasians in the process.

The graduating guard hit an ice-cold three with 23.6 seconds to go to lead the Tigers to a thrilling 68-65 win over the University of the Philippines and their first UAAP Finals appearance in five years.

“Siyempre ako, I always expect that we’re gonna win. Lagi naman kaming nagpe-prepare to win,” Subido said. “Nagkaroon din talaga ng breaks of the ball game tulad [ng sabi] ni coach Aldin [Ayo], hindi ako nilapitan ni Bright [Akhuetie] when I took the shot, so ayun.”

This moment was actually four years in the making for Subido.

The 5-foot-9 guard was supposed to make his first finals appearance back in 2015, but an ACL tear kept him out of the Tigers lineup in the championship series which Far Eastern University eventually won.

He returned a year later to play under the Boy Sablan and endured a season where the Tigers won just three games, finishing dead last in the tournament. It was during those times of struggles that he envisioned his crowning glory.

“May mga times na nai-imagine ko, na siyempre magisa ako naiisip ko rin yan, ‘Game winner, Renzo’ and I just can’t help but smile,” Subido shared. "I’m really grateful na binigay sa akin ni Lord yung game winner na yun.”

Subido made the ultimate sacrifice a year later when he walked away from the UST community in Sablan’s second year to hone his skills in the PBA D-League with Marinerong Pilipino.

“It was a tough decision, the fact na you’re leaving UST and the UAAP but that’s a sacrifice I have to make para maging ganito yung performance ko.”

That decision paid dividends for Subido as he slowly recovered the form made him one of the most sought after talents coming out of high school.

“It really helped me a lot, I learned a lot from a lot of coaches, the Banal brothers (Koy and Joel), maraming tumutulong sa akin na very good in basketball, yung mga insights na bibigay nila sakin,” Subido shared.

“I’m really grateful for those coaches and yung mga veteran players na nakasabay ko, sila coach Denok Miranda, sila Mark Isip, they’ve been to the professional level already so marami talaga akong natutunan sa kanila.”

Subido returned to the community the moment Aldin Ayo was named as the new coach of the Tigers back in 2018. Under Ayo, he finally blossomed into the gutsy leader that Thomasians expected him to be when he first came in.

His biggest moment came on Wednesday when he hit the biggest shot of UST's season.

That made the journey all worth it for Subido.

“I’ve experienced the lowest ng team, yung laging talo yung UST team and I just told myself na I dont want to go through that anymore," he said.
