Renzo Subido picks right time to make 'biggest shot of career'

Subido on dagger 3 vs UP: 'Hindi siya bad shot. Pumasok eh'
    Oct 16, 2019

RENZO Subido wouldn't deny that his dagger three in University of Santo Tomas' 84-78 win over University of the Philippines on Wednesday was easily "the biggest shot of my basketball career."

"Yes, I can say that was," he said.

That pullup three over Juan Gomez de Liano with 26.7 seconds remaining gave the Growling Tigers the breathing room they needed, taking the four-point cushion, 82-78, as they went on to sweep the Fighting Maroons and keep themselves in the tight Final Four race this UAAP Season 82.

"Hindi siya bad shot. Pumasok eh," the 23-year-old said of the bucket, which was the biggest of his 13 points for the night on a 3-of-6 shooting from deep, to go along with five rebounds and five assists.

Coach Aldin Ayo also exalted the graduating court general for not only making the big shot, but also exhibiting poise on the court as one of the team's veterans, which to him, has rubbed off greatly on the team's newcomers.

"Si Renzo ang pinakamatanda, pinaka-senior sa team, so we're expecting him to make the right decision," he said. "There are instances na iniisip ko, kailangan ko ba ibalik si Mark (Nonoy) or si Renzo, but I'll go for experience."

It truly was a big bucket on the part of Subido, helping UST take the crucial victory as it moved up to solo third place with its 6-5 card.

In the process, the Growling Tigers also inched closer to ending their three-year Final Four drought as the 5-foot-7 guard hopes to end his UAAP career.

"It feels great kasi we badly needed this win," he said. "I keep telling my teammates na whatever happens, this game will decide the outcome of our season kasi if we win against UP again, it's gonna give us the confidence to compete in our last three games."

"This is my last year, so I just wanna make my last year count. Last year, same case din at 5-5, different lineup lang, but we lost our last four games. Ayoko mag-end up ulit sa ganoong situation and I was just conscious to give my best talaga. I didn't wanna let the Thomasian community down."
