LAWYER Rene 'Rebo' Saguisag. Jr. is set to be named commissioner of the UAAP Season 78 basketball tournament, sources told Spin.ph.
The son of former Senator and human rights lawyer Rene Saguisag has been picked by host school University of the Philippines to run the seniors, women’s, and juniors basketball competition of the country's premier league, the source said.
Sought for comment by Spin.ph, the 42-year-old lawyer said nothing is official yet as to his appointment but admitted that he was offered the commissionership.
“To be honest, yes the job has been offered but nothing has been put in writing,” said Saguisag, who was present during the opening playdate of the NCAA Season 91 basketball tournament on Saturday.
Once the appointment becomes final, Saguisag will become the first lawyer since Chito Narvasa to run the collegiate league which has mostly named basketball personalities to the position.
Narvasa, who is also a former PBA coach, is now set to inherit the pro league reins from another lawyer, Chito Salud. Two other PBA former commissioners - Noli Eala and Salud's late father Rudy - were also lawyers.
Saguisag, however, is not new to sports, or basketball for that matter.
He is a Sports Science graduate at UP and once coached a women's basketball team. In recent years, he has also helped the NCAA Management Committee in the interpretation of the league's constitution and by-laws.
Saguisag figures to essay the same role, among others, once he takes on the UAAP job.
“Sa pagkaka-present sa akin, the commissioner's job is practically interpretation of laws. Kung papasok ‘yung aking experience bilang abogado, siguro hindi naman po nakakasama," he said.
“I think sa application of the rules. whether Fiba or UAAP rules, I think meron tayong experience doon,” he added.
