JERIE Pingoy has been included in Ateneo's lineup for the Filoil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup, with the reigning UAAP champions expressing hope that their prized recruit will be allowed to suit up in the preseason tournament.
Ateneo head coach Bo Perasol confirmed to Spin.ph on Friday that Pingoy has been listed in the Blue Eagles’ lineup for the preseason tournament opening on Saturday, pending a decision from organizers.
“We put him in there just in case he will be allowed to play,” said Perasol in an SMS message.
Based on the original tournament rules, a player should be eligible for the coming season of their mother leagues in order to play. The wisdom behind the rule is for the teams to actually prepare for the coming campaign using their possible lineups.
Under that rule, Pingoy should be ineligible for the tournament since he is still redshirting for Ateneo following the two-time UAAP juniors MVP’s controversial transfer from Far Eastern University.
However, tournament director Joey Guillermo clarified that Pingoy can still play in the tournament provided he gets a clearance from his former squad FEU-Diliman. The rule was instituted two years ago, he added.
“He can play provided he is released by his old school,” Guillermo said.
Ateneo, which has undergone a revamp after winning its fifth straight UAAP title, is set to face Southwestern University on opening day of the Premier Cup on Saturday at The Arena in San Juan.
But Perasol said that they don’t expect Pingoy to suit up for the game against the Cobras.
“Maybe in the second or third game of the tournament,” said Perasol.
If he is cleared, the Cebuano star is in line to square off with La Salle's own recruit from the South, Kib Montalbo, when the college arch-rivals clash on June 1.
Pingoy has officially donned the Ateneo jersey last week during the Blue Eagles’ opening game of the Fr. Martin Cup but failed to finish the game due to an injury.
Perasol said that Pingoy has already recovered from the injury.
