NOT having any official capacity at University of Santo Tomas hasn’t prevented Pido Jarencio from helping out.
The former UST coach turned into a virtual scout for the Growling Tigers in Game Two of the UAAP Finals against Far Eastern University on Saturday and relayed his observations to the team when he entered the dugout at the half.
“May sinabi lang ako, pangkiliti lang,” the current GlobalPort coach said with a smile during the post game interview following the Batang Pier’s 120-105 win over Blackwater on Sunday in the Smart Bro-PBA Philippine Cup.
“Kasi medyo may nasilip lang ako,” he added. “Baka kako, pwede tayo pakinggan nung mga bata tsaka ni coach.”
Asked if he was invited to come over to give a pep talk, Jarencio joked he just gate-crashed the Tigers’ halftime huddle.
“Makapal mukha (ko), pumasok lang ako,” the affable mentor said in jest that drew laughter from members of the press.
Asked what he said, Jarencio declined to answer.
“Secret,” he said with a sheepish smile. “Baka malaman pa ng kabila at gayahin.”
Whatever he said worked wonders as the Tigers overcame a halftime deficit behind the hot hands of Kevin Ferrer to force a deciding game on Wednesday at the Mall of Asia Arena.
“Pero it’s all coach Bong (dela Cruz) at silang mga bata,” Jarencio stressed. “Bigay natin credit kay Coach Bong. Hindi tayo. Nagbigay lang ako ng advice.”
