NORTHPORT coach Pido Jarencio was one happy man on Wednesday.
Not only did the Batang Pier beat league-leader NLEX, 102-94, to keep their playoff hopes alive in the PBA Governors' Cup, Jarencio also celebrated his alma mater University of Santo Tomas' march to the UAAP Finals.
A delighted Jarencio began the traditional postgame press conference for winning coaches in true UST fashion.
“Go USTe! Go USTe,” said Jarencio, echoing the popular UST chant.
Jarencio later took to Twitter to congratulate his alma mater, which he led to a UAAP championship in 2006.
Congratulations my Beloved UST growling tigers! See you in the Finals!????— pidojarencio (@pidojarencio1) November 13, 2019
Before coaching in the PBA, Jarencio handled UST from 2006 to 2013 after playing for the then Glowing Goldies in the 1980s. In just his first year, Jarencio steered the Growling Tigers to the championship in 2006, beating Ateneo in three thrilling games.
That championship team, which took to heart Jarencio’s 3 Ps of ‘Puso, Pride, Palaban,’ included the likes of now NorthPort player Jervy Cruz, Jojo Duncil, Japs Cuan, and Allen Evangelista. They beat a Blue Eagles squad coached by Norman Black and bannered by JC Intal and Doug Kramer.
“Unang una, congratulations UST Growling Tigers. Alam mo naman, mahal na mahal ko ‘yan. Mahal na mahal ko ‘yung eskwela na ‘yan. Congratulations. Against Ateneo,” said Jarencio.
Jarencio warned not to count out the Tigers in the finals opposite defending champion Ateneo, which swept the eliminations to gain outright entry to the finals.
“Okay ‘yan. Lahat naman posible eh,” said Jarencio.
Jarencio ended the postgame press conference with another UST chant.
