IS Pido Jarencio returning to the Tigers’ lair?
Sources told SPIN.ph there is a growing clamor for the return of the coach that led University of Santo Tomas to its last UAAP championship amid the uncertainty on the status of current coach Bong Dela Cruz.
Jarencio's return is being pushed by alumni as well as the major backers of the Tigers, sources added, but it remains to be seen if school officials will give in to the calls.
“Ang clamor talaga ng alumni, ibalik si Pido, kasi dun sila nag-champion eh,” said the source.
Jarencio's own status at GlobalPort is just as uncertain after owner Mikee Romero ordered assistant team manager Johnedel Cardel to call the shots for the PBA team in its last outing in the Commissioner's Cup.
GlobalPort is expected to make the change permanent in the next two weeks, with Jarencio either being put in an executive position or a consultant role and Erwin Sta. Maria replacing Erick Gonzales as top assistant coach.
At the moment, there is no clear frontrunner for the UST coaching job as school officials have yet to announce results on an investigation into complaints that surfaced against Dela Cruz.
Former Jarencio deputy Estong Ballesteros and former Tigers star Bal David are among those being mentioned as candidates while another ex-UST standout, Chris Cantonjos, runs the Tigers' daily practice.
