BACK-UP center Paolo Pe has been a revelation for University of Santo Tomas, throwing his weight around in the paint in his first two games of the UAAP season.
The fourth-year center had a rousing debut for the Tigers as he grabbed 12 rebounds in the team’s 63-58 overtime win over La Salle and followed it up with a five-rebound effort against Adamson on Saturday in a 67-62 UST victory.
But more significantly, he took Adamson's Ingrid Sewa away from his comfort zone and held the Cameroonian scoreless in the second half after he came away with 13 points in the first two quarters.
UST coach Pido Jarencio acknowledged Pe was a major factor in UST’s fast start to the season which put the Tigers just behind early leader Far Eastern University (3-0).
Jarencio said Pe’s stint with Blackwater Sports in the PBA D-League polished his game and raised his confidence, making him a much better player in his role as back-up to Karim Abdul.
“Maganda kasi ‘yung experience na nakuha niya sa D-League,” said Jarencio of the former Ateneo Blue Eaglet.
Pe was a teammate of fellow Tiger Kevin Ferrer as they helped Blackwater Sports win the Foundation Cup title at the expense of fancied NLEX Road Warriors prior to the UAAP season.
“Nag-mature na si Paolo with Kevin. Winners na sila. Nag-champion sila. Kaya may composure na ‘yung bata,” said Jarencio.
