PAPOT Paredes has left the De La Salle Green Archers to concentrate on academics, but is hoping to be able to suit up for a PBA D-League team in the future.
De La Salle coach Gee Abanilla confirmed on Wednesday that the former Philippine youth team member is no longer part of the team. The 6-foot-5 Paredes is the second player to leave La Salle this year after back-up center Alfonso Gotladera moved to Ateneo.
“Papot made a personal decision that he will concentrate on his studies and, maybe, try out with a D-League team,” Abanilla said after De La Salle's quarterfinal loss to San Beda in the Filoil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup. “I’m happy because it’s something that he could work on.”
“That’s what he told me (trying out in the PBA D-League). That’s why if he becomes successful, I will be the first to be happy,” Abanilla said.
“That’s his decision. I can’t force you to do something that you don’t want,” he added.
Paredes played in the frontcourt for the Green Archers under former La Salle head coaches Franz Pumaren and Dindo Pumaren in his first two seasons with the starting in 2010.
His minutes, however, took a dip through the years with the arrival of Norbert Torres, Arnold Van Opstal, and Yutien Andrada. He only played in six games last season under Abanilla as he averaged less than a point (0.8) while tallying 2.3 rebounds per outing.
“I also apologized to him because my job as a coach was to bring out the best in him. But because of the circumstance, siguro hindi ko nagawa ’yun para sa kanya,” Abanilla said.
