WHILE preparation for most players aspiring to make it to the pros meant countless hours training on the hardcourt, Pao Javelona spent quite some time studying the game from the sidelines.

He hopes it gives him an edge in the PBA rookie draft.

One of 55 players in the player pool for the October 30 draft at the Robinsons Place Manila, Javelona’s preparations included taking a job as assistant coach under Eric Altamirano at National University after playing for the Bulldogs last year.

The 23-year-old Javelona said the experience as an assistant coach has enhanced his basketball knowledge as he prepares himself for the pro ranks.

Javelona said it wasn’t his original plan, but Altamirano welcomed the idea.

“Nung una, biro biro lang. Tapos after nun, naisip ni coach na bakit hindi,” Javelona said.

Javelona wound up helping players who were once his teammates at NU.

The player from Bacolod said he has learned a lot, finding greater appreciation of coaching.
