NATIONAL University will hold its victory party on Thursday to celebrate its UAAP Season 77 men’s basketball title that ended a 60-year drought for the school.

Nilo Ocampo, NU’s representative to the UAAP board, said the victory celebration will be held on Thursday night at the school’s grounds in Sampaloc, Manila.

“We will honor the athletes,” said Ocampo. “May mga pagkain, a combination of free and something you can also buy, may mga bands. Darating din ang mga alumni.”

The school has plenty to celebrate. Not only has the Bulldogs won their first championship since 1954, but NU's women's basketball team also won the UAAP title via 16-game sweep of the tournament.

However, don't expect a bonfire to highlight the NU celebration.

Bonfire celebrations have become popular in the college league, with Ateneo holding one to mark its championships and the University of the Philippines staging its own after ending a 27-game losing streak.

But Ocampo said a bonfire won’t happen at NU simply because the school doesn’t have the space to hold such.

“Takot kami mag-bonfire kasi baka ma-sunog ‘yung campus namin,” said Ocampo in jest. “Wala kasi kaming soccer field katulad ng Ateneo. Pero may party dito.”

Ocampo said the school also tinkered with the idea of having a fireworks display, but that too is in doubt.

“Ang alam ko, dapat may fireworks pero maraming limitations dito dahil malapit kami sa Malacañang,” said Ocampo.

Nevertheless, Ocampo said the school promises a festive atmosphere that the community will surely enjoy.
