THE National University pep squad is leaving no stone unturned in its bid to finally steal the UAAP cheerdance competitions title from perennial champion University of the Philippines.
The team led by coach Ghicka Bernabe wants the title so much it has been training without fail for the last four months, not skipping a day even when the metropolis was hit by floods caused by Typhoon Maring.
“Ganun po talaga. May misyon po kami eh. Sakripisyo talaga,” said NU pep squad team captain, Adrian Conrad, whose team placed third behind UP and Far Eastern University in the last UAAP cheerdance war.
“Kahit nga po lahat nagbakasyon nung bumabaha si bagyong Maring last week, kami po hindi nag-postpone ng ensayo,” added the fourth year BSC Management student.
The Bulldogs, bankrolled by Macro LPG, should be one of the favorites going to the September 15 competition at the Mall of Asia Arena after skyrocketing from sixth place in 2011 to second runner-up last year.
The group also snared the National Cheerdance championships crown last March, but the NU cheerdancers know what they would be up against in the finale.
UP is gunning for a fourth straight UAAP Cheerdance crown, having won it five times over the last six seasons.
“Magaling po sa choreography at creativity yung UP, kaya 'yun po ang challenge sa min ngayon - ang tapatan sila,” stressed Conrad.
Bernabe bared NU will never settle for anything less than a championship.
“Kaya po naming mag-champion. Naniniwala ako dun. At hindi po namin tinitignan ang first runner-up or another third place finish this time,” said Bernabe.
“Sinasabi po namin yan because that is our aim. I am not afraid na maging pressure ito for us,” she added. “UP at FEU po ang first at second… Aim lang kami to improve. So I believe the pressure should be on them.”
Bernabe also bared that her 25-man cheerdance team is preparing a whole new routine for this year's battle.
“Yung last year kasi namin, very sweet and Disney princess-like ang approach. Ngayon we will come up with something strong. 'Yung astig talaga,” said the stunning pep squad mentor.
“What’s good about this team now is maganda na ang flow ng training namin. Minor adjustment na lang at polishing ng routine,” added Bernabe.
