NATIONAL University clinched the title in the 1st Philippine-Australia Goodwill Basketball Invitational on Saturday night after Arellano defeated San Sebastian, 116-113, in the final game of the tournament at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

Zach Nichols scored 31 points while Dioncee Holts finished with 26 for the Chiefs, who ended up in a tie with NU at 4-1 (win-loss). But the Bulldogs won the championship via the winner-over-the-other rule owing to their 73-53 rout of the Chiefs on Friday.

NU beat Perth Sharks, 82-58, in its final game on Saturday.

The successful title run by the Bulldogs should bolster their preparation for the coming Season 78 of the UAAP which starts on September 5.

NU will also see action in the Filoil preseason tournament set April 25.

Arellano settled for second place, while Ateneo finished third. The Blue Eagles and Stags ended up tied with a 3-2 card, but San Sebastian won the tiebreaker behind their 81-74 win on Friday.
