NATIONAL University began like a house on fire in Season 77 of the UAAP men’s basketball tournament, but now finds itself struggling after losing back-to-back games.

The Bulldogs will try to end the mid-season slump on Wednesday when they face winless Adamson in the 2 p.m. first game at the Mall of Asia Arena.

Two straight losses against Far Eastern University relegated the Bulldogs to fourth place with a 5-3 (win-loss) slate behind league leaders Ateneo, La Salle, and the Tamaraws, all with 6-2 records.

NU coach Eric Altamirano though still likes the team’s chances as breaks didn’t come its way in its close 74-70 overtime loss to the Tamaraws last Sunday.

The Bulldogs were actually in contention for the whole game that was marred by 10 deadlocks and eight lead changes.

“I thought we played better defense. We were able to neutralize what they are doing on offense. But we allowed them to come back. When the game got close, the breaks of the game didn’t go our way,” said Altamirano.

The Falcons have lost their eighth game of the season but nearly pulled an upset over University of Santo Tomas following a 61-59 decision on Saturday.

The last thing Altamirano wants his team to do is to be complacent ahead of their match against Adamson.

“We just have to remain focused. We are still within our target. Ang importante lang is we remained focus, move forward, and forget about this game (against FEU),” said Altamirano.

Alfred Aroga, Troy Rosario, and Gelo Alolino combined for 45 points for the Bulldogs in the loss against the Tamaraws.
