UNIVERSITY of the East played without Roi Sumang but still defeated Adamson, 77-60, on Saturday in the UAAP Season 76 men’s basketball tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Charles Mammie had 24 points and 24 rebounds, while Bong Gallanza came off the bench to score 17 points for the Red Warriors, who improved to 6-7 win-loss record with one game to go in their ill-fated campaign.
The Red Warriors, who are out of the Final Four picture, won despite missing Sumang who dressed for the game but was not fielded in by UE coach Boycie Zamar.
Adamson ended another disappointing season with a 4-10 win-loss record. It may also be the Falcons' last game with Leo Austria, who is not keen to extend his contract with the school.
Sumang suffered a strain in his right knee during UE’s last game against Ateneo but was cleared to in play the game.
It turned out the Warriors hardly needed him as the Warriors broke the game wide-open by limiting the Falcons to five points in the final period on the way to ending a four-game losing skid.
“It’s been a month since we last won,” said Zamar. “A month of struggles, sleepless nights, dami nangyari.”
“Marami kaming dinaanan. Bagyo, baha, but we have survived,” Zamar added.
