RAPHAEL Atangan may need to sit out a year before playing for National University in the UAAP men's basketball tournament.
NU head coach Eric Altamirano said the Bulldogs intend to recruit the school's top high school player, but added the young star may have to wait in line for a spot in the varsity team to open up since they still have an intact lineup for next season.
“We still don’t know kasi baka masayang ’yung playing year niya,” said Altamirano. “But definitely, we already asked him to commit to us.”
Atangan impressed in 2011 when he averaged 12.4 points, 7.8 rebounds, 2.1 assists, 1.3 steals, and a shade under a block per game in leading the Bullpups to their first-ever UAAP juniors crown.
He was once again instrumental in the Bullpups’ return to the Finals in 2012, when they lost to the Jerie Pingoy-led Far Eastern University-Diliman.
Altamirano said Atangan will definitely be a good fit for the team in 2014.
“Maybe not this coming season but ’yung susunod na season dahil by that time, marami na talaga kaming butas. But we like him, we expect him to play for us,” said Altamirano.
Last year, freshman Jay-J Alejandro also sat out after seeing action with the Philippine youth team, but is expected to be part of this year’s NU lineup.
