UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas and De La Salle look to bolster their bid for Final Four slots when they face teams out to play the spoilers’ role in Thursday’s crucial UAAP men’s basketball doubleheader at the Mall of Asia Arena.
The Tigers try to finish the elimination round on a winning note against University of the East at 2 p.m. while the Green Archers face the upset-seeking Falcons at 4 p.m.
UST is tied with Far Eastern University for second with 9-4 while De La Salle shares fourth place with National University at 8-5 with the eliminations down to its final three playdates.
UST goes for an all-important 10th win following their 66-68 loss to Ateneo last Saturday and gain at least a playoff for the twice-to-beat advantage in the Final Four.
A loss could be costly for the Tigers, who are still appealing their loss to Ateneo to the technical committee, as they can slip to as low as a playoff for fourth place depending on the result of the FEU-NU replay on September 23.
Meanwhile, a defeat by the Green Archers followed by an NU win over FEU will eliminate the Green Archers from the Final Four picture.
Following a remarkable win that put the Green Archers in contention for a Final Four berth, De La Salle coach Gee Abanilla hopes that their win over Far Eastern University last Sunday won’t go to waste.
The Green Archers beat the Tamaraws, 63-56, which complicated things in the team standings.
“Adamson is really a strong team, tingin ko maganda ang preparasyon nila. Parang gusto nila spoiler's role but our desire is different and it will be tested on Thursday. We want to win this game badly,” said Abanilla.
Adamson coach Leo Austria wants his team to go out with a bang.
“Hindi na namin tinitignan ‘yung standings. We all know na kailangan nila manalo so we might be the spoiler,” said Austria.
Adamson is tied with UE with at 3-10.
